Oil Frantic in Penang

When I saw the empty oil shelves in Jusco on Friday night, I was wondering if there was a drop in oil prices or Jusco was having some kind of sale. I didn’t keep myself abreast with the latest news and did not know that there was an oil shortage. This morning, after having breakfast, we went over to Tesco to do our regular grocery shopping. There were loads of people, and no doubt, Tesco is making a good living in Malaysia, especially Penang. As we go deeper and deeper into the store, I started to notice many of the store shelves were empty. I wasn’t surprise, the papers this morning was saying that Election is eminent and it would bee soon, and seeing this news, we too were stocking, just in case there were some rowdy folks that were not happy with the election results. Then as we were at the end of the store, we heard people shouting and there was a huge crowd at a specific aisle. It was the Oil Aisle, and people were pushing and screaming, just to get their hands on Tesco Cooking Oil. I believe Tesco Cooking Oil were never this popular. It was crazy. Some even took the entire box, prompting the Tesco staff to scream at them, adding to the Chaos. I was wondering what contributed to this shortage? I guess this is one of the interesting stories to tell the next generation on how at one time at Tesco, the Tesco Cooking Oil were be snap up by hoards of people who were hungry for Oil.

On this day..

what I heard is that the cooking oil is being illegally sold to our neighbouring countries which offer higher prices for the oil, compared to what we are selling here (due to it being a controlled item here). And with the memo that we will not (yet(for reasons best known to ourselves)) increase cooking oil prices, the suppliers will continue to seludup the oil across our borders. Imagine Sunshine used to received 300 boxes (4 bottles each) of cooking oil now receives only 50 boxes for the same period of time… So, couple of options:
1) Hijack the next lorry carrying Neptune or Knife Cooking Oil
2) Wake up early and go to Tesco and FIGHT for your cooking oil
3) Make friends with the Tesco Warehouse security
4) Make friends with the Sunshine Square Warehouse security
5) Switch to Olive Oil or Jagung Oil, or
6) Switch to PORK OIL…

My mother said, poke a tap into her side and turn it on and recycle oil from her love handle. Wahaha!
